Announced on its 25th anniversary this year, the comedy film Flirting Scholar is getting a remake that will stream exclusively on Youku in time for Chinese New Year. If you guys remember, Flirting Scholar was released back in 1993 and starred Stephen Chow and Gong Li.
Producer Wong Jing has recently uploaded sneak peeks of the pictorials taken for the new remake. He also commented that this remake is more developed and poses a new challenge for the filmmakers as the audience is now different. He said that the biggest feature of the remake is that you won't see Tang Bohu and Qiu Xiang. Those are the main characters of the story, so we may have to take what he says with a grain of salt! It could be that he simply means there will be no Stephen Chow and Gong Li.
The cast will include Benny Chan, Lam Chi-chung, Natalis Chan, Cheng Pei-pei, Kingdom Yuen, Sabrina Qiu and newcomers like Zhen Qi and Yun Qianqian.
Natalis Chan, Cheng Pei-pei and Kingdom Yuen will reprise their roles from the original movie. Benny Chan's role, however, is still a mystery. I won't be surprised if he is the new Tang Bohu.
The first Flirting Scholar will be a tough act to follow. They made a Flirting Scholar 2 in 2010 starring Huang Xiaoming but it didn't do so well. Stephen Chow's classic Flirting Scholar puts pressure on the cast and crew of Wong Jing's version as I believe nothing can beat the original. But for now, we will wait and hope this one lives up to it at least.
